ABSTRACT
The relationship between man and environment is very close, first of all he tries to adjust himself with the environment and then adjusts the environment according to himself. Man has achieved success in almost every area and this has resulted in making lives more comfortable but this development has been gained at the cost of environment degradation. With the increased burden of population the environment gets degraded because the carrying capacity is limited and the population growth rate is increasing day by day. Which in turn increases the burden on the environment.
Now the world has recognized the importance of nature its Bio-diversity and need to maintain it. Many government and Non- Government organization are working with the objective of conservation and preservation of our environment.
This paper brings to light the role played by NGO led Self Help Groups in contributing to environmental conservation. The Self Help Groups are playing an important role in increasing the awareness about community issues and needs.
They act as a medium between the Government, Non-Governmental organizations and village community. They work to spread the message that �Self Help is the Best Help�. They assist the NGOs in conducting various health awareness camps.
They educate the village community in the necessity of maintaining good hygiene and proper sanitary conditions. They conserve the nature they producing the products which are recyclable and non polluting to the environment. They also use locally available raw materials to produce products thereby help in avoiding people moving out to urban areas in search of livelihood.
In short the activities of SHGs are not only revolving around savings and credits but also integrating the socio- economical and health issues in to the various agendas of the groups.
